How Does Ozone Catalytic Oxidation Technology Work in Sewage Treatment?

With the development of industry, water pollution has become a global environmental concern in recent years. Medical supplies, industrial wastewater discharge, and other issues pose a potential threat to ecosystems. Furthermore, these pollutants are highly toxic and difficult to degrade. Many of these pollutants cannot be effectively removed during water treatment processes, posing a significant challenge for the wastewater treatment industry.
For this reason, researchers have developed the latest water treatment technology: ozone catalytic oxidation. I believe everyone is familiar with ozone. It is a strong oxidizing agent with a higher oxidizing power than hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Furthermore, ozone produces oxygen, not other harmful gases, after reaction, so it does not cause secondary environmental pollution.
Generally speaking, ozone reacts with organic matter in water primarily through direct and indirect reactions.
Direct reactions involve ozone molecules reacting directly with organic matter, while indirect reactions involve ozone first decomposing in water to produce highly oxidizing free radicals, which then react with the organic matter.
Ozone catalytic oxidation is primarily used to treat organic pollutants in water. It is an advanced oxidation technology that combines the oxidizing properties of ozone with catalysts to efficiently remove organic matter and improve water quality. Furthermore, ozone concentration determines the reaction rate: the higher the ozone concentration, the higher the catalytic oxidation rate.
In addition to ozone concentration affecting the reaction rate, temperature, reaction time, and catalyst also influence it. Catalysts play a key role in ozone catalytic oxidation. Common catalysts include metal oxides such as iron, manganese, and copper. The choice and application of the catalyst directly influence the effectiveness of the catalytic oxidation. Unlike homogeneous catalytic oxidation reactions, heterogeneous catalytic oxidation reactions typically occur at the solid-liquid interface near the catalyst surface. The surface properties of the catalyst play a significant role in heterogeneous catalytic reactions.
The surface area of the ozone decomposition catalyst also affects the decomposition and catalytic performance of water treatment. For example, the carriers of columnar and granular ozone decomposition catalysts typically use materials with larger surface areas to enhance adsorption and reaction performance.
Ozone catalytic oxidation technology is a topic worthy of further in-depth research and exploration. It is believed that ozone catalytic oxidation technology will play an even greater role in the near future. Wastewater treatment technology cannot stagnate, and we urge everyone to protect the environment. Addressing the root causes is the best approach.
